The First 30 Days: Caring for Your New Hardwood Floors

The first few weeks after a hardwood floor is installed are important. While your new floor is ready to be enjoyed, taking a few simple precautions during the first 30 days can help protect the finish and ensure your investment starts off on the right foot.

At Scerri Quality Wood Floors, we believe that proper care from day one contributes to the long-term beauty and performance of your hardwood flooring.

Allow the Floor to Settle

Hardwood is a natural material that continues to respond to its environment. During the first month, your flooring is adjusting to the normal temperature and humidity conditions of your home.

Maintaining a consistent indoor climate helps minimize excessive expansion and contraction during this initial period.

Wait Before Placing Heavy Furniture

If possible, avoid placing exceptionally heavy furniture on the floor immediately after installation, particularly if a site-applied finish has recently cured.

When moving furniture back into the room:

  • Lift furniture instead of dragging it
  • Install felt pads on all furniture legs
  • Place heavy items carefully to avoid dents or scratches

Be Mindful of Rugs

Area rugs add warmth and style, but it's best to wait before covering large sections of a newly finished floor.

Allowing the finish to fully cure and the floor to breathe helps ensure the best long-term performance. Your flooring professional can advise you on the appropriate waiting period based on the finish that was used.

Keep the Floor Clean

Dust, sand, and small debris can act like sandpaper underfoot.

During the first month:

  • Sweep or vacuum regularly using a hardwood-safe attachment
  • Wipe up spills promptly
  • Avoid harsh cleaning products unless they are approved for your floor's finish

Simple, consistent cleaning helps protect the surface from unnecessary wear.

Maintain Stable Humidity

One of the best things you can do during the first 30 days is maintain consistent indoor humidity.

Avoid dramatic swings in temperature or humidity, as these can cause unnecessary movement in the wood. Keeping your home's environment stable helps your flooring perform as intended.

Enjoy Your Investment

A new hardwood floor is designed to be lived on. While a little extra care during the first month is beneficial, your flooring is built for everyday life.

By following a few simple guidelines during those first 30 days, you'll help preserve the craftsmanship, appearance, and long-term performance of your hardwood floors for many years to come.
